Sammael_Satan.jpg

A new illustration of Satan/Sammael coming at you. Yeah finally a finished illustration of his new design, with the added bonus that I’m mentioning I’ve changed his real name to Sammael, but he’s mostly called by his title of (the) Satan.

I saw this up on dA, along with your fun accident that you created with Photoshop. Fantastic work as always, Lady Sai!

Sammael is not Satan. Sammael is one of the Dukes, or maybe Lords, but not Satan. He is a satan, but not the one and only. Lucifer is THE Satan. So there. Good pic nontheless.

You may be thinking of a mix of Paradise Lost and common folklore. I’m going by the Jewish scriptures, both canon and not. THE Satan, or HaSatan, is a force or an entity under the command of god that tests people’s faith with trials and temptations (this can be seen most clearly in the Book of Job.) He’s not an evil or fallen spirit. It’s only in Christianity and Islam that there’s a devil figure working against god (which is where my Lucifer character derives from), and only in Islamic scripture is there a clear fall of this figure.

I’m going with the Lesser Key of Solomon. He was listed as ‘a satan’, and I don’t believe they ever gave his name. Sammael was in older Jewish scriptures? I’ll have to reread them and look harder. AHhh, Lucifer. I don’t think he really works at cross purposes with God, he just thinks he knows better. Like someone ‘taking care’ of their parents, thinking that their parents are old and foolish. Off topic, anyways. You seem to know quite a bit about a lot of things. Like me, but you have had more time to gather information and process fact from falshood and opinion.

Well a Satan, THE Satan, either way it’s only a title. Older Jewish scriptures like the Key of Solomon do imply there were multiple accusing spirits. But yes just look at the Old Testament even, Satan isn’t an evil fallen angel he works for God.

My Lucifer is built entirely from the other side of the spectrum though, folklore and oral tradition. Of course not that I believe in any of it in the first place, scriptural or otherwise, mind you :p

Ah, yes. The satan had to ask permission to test Job’s faith, which THE Satan of Christian tradition would never have done. Lucifer means bearer of light, but I guess he got tired of bearing it and wanted a turn to shine as well, which, oops, wasn;t the brightest thing to do.

You can have extensive esoteric knowledge without being a part of the religion.

It’s not that esoteric, really.

Lucifer actually doesn’t refer to an angel but a king of Babylon. The stories of a fallen angel named Lucifer really are complete folklore.

Folklore that was integrated into the religion, as with almost all religons. But, anyways, I like the name Lucifer. I want to name my firstborn Lucifer. Or, if it’s a girl, Lilith.

That all depends on your viewpoint. You could say anything that isn’t biblical canon isn’t part of the religion, and the story has no real effect on belief. Though it is funny how folklore like that can find its way into common belief, and some people never question it.

Easter and Christmas are good examples of that. Both were taken from other religions to make Christianity more appealing, and prevent the worship of both at the same time, or so it seems to me. People obey what others tell them without question, especially if that is what they were brought up learning.
