The Scienteers

Posted by MangaPunkSai on February 3, 2008

The ScienteersMy good colleague HPK, along with a brave rag-tag team, has just launched a bold new project called The Scienteers (you might have noticed him buying up my Project Wonderful space, the little dickens.) Basically this site is going to be all about promoting webcomics and collecting a fighting team of talent under one splendiforous web-roof. Granted I’m now just making up words, but let me let some press speak for itself:

"One of the features of The Scienteers website is the idea that we want to expose webcomics that may not be getting enough attention when they’re well done. So, one of the goals was to find a way to promote people’s webcomics frequently, thus we have two methods at our disposal. One, submit your news to us! You can either use the handy-dandy on-site form or you can e-mail us directly at thescienteers@gmail.com. We’ll be posting news and blurbs as frequently as we can, so don’t hesitate to get ahold of us! Secondly, we’re going to be running contributed promotional webcomics on our site. Essentially, you can send us 1-3 page promotional stories for us to run on the site and promote your work! Maybe a behind the scenes look, or a non-canon gag, or maybe even a preview of a much larger storyline. We’ll be pleased to run them during certain periods. It’s much better than a text link and a banner ad, right? The format of the comics, as well as further information can be found on the comic submission page. So, help The Scienteers help you. Send us news and comics so we can spread the word about your work!"

So whether you’re a struggling webcomic artist looking for some friendly promotion amongst your peers, or just an appreciator who wants a veridical smorgusboard of comic pages, blurbs, interviews and other comics culture oriented things to read be sure to check it out. It is a budding project at the moment but it’s bound to grow quite rapidly, so hold tight to your bookmarks.

Zero Punctuation

Posted by MangaPunkSai on January 24, 2008

Zero PunctuationI’m just making a short post to inform you all of something I’ve been enjoying immensely as of late. A funny British man known only as "Yahtzee" has rocketed to internets super-stardom within the video game community with his irreverent reviews, thrashing games in a hilarious and witty manner even if he enjoys them.

I was introduced to these brilliant little videos by a bitter and crusty PC gamer I know who was mocking my love of Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect and myself overall for being a stupid, console-loving plebian. So if you want to enjoy some video game reviews that are far, far, far funnier and more foul-mouthed than mine, click here.

Speaking of video game reviews perhaps I should do some more. Or write about something else for a change.

The McCullough Mass Effect Debacle

Posted by MangaPunkSai on January 16, 2008

Kevin McCullough Mass EffectSo much can happen so quickly on the internet in just the span of three days. I’ve been following such a whirlwind regarding Kevin McCullough, a conservative blogger and apparently an obscure radio and/or podcast personality who seems to know jack-all about jack half the time and mistakingly extended his school-yard taunting thinly disguised as journalistic blogging to the world of video games.

McCullough posited that the video game Mass Effect (which I have completed, by the way, and am considering doing final impressions on) was some sort of sex simulation game where you could design characters specifically to "hump" in, and I quote, "the most realistic sex acts ever conceived". He even goes on to claim Mass Effect contains rape and sodomy. Oh lawdy. Read the rest of this entry »

Otakukin and Fictionkin

Posted by MangaPunkSai on June 4, 2007
I'm Link cat
Typical Otakukin cat.

It always amazes me the subcultures that have either developed or are heavily perpetuated because of the internets. Where normally I’d rant about fetishes and slashers and Suethors when it comes to internets dumbfuckery today I’m traversing even more bizarre territories.

If you’ve been on the internets for more than 2 months you probably know what an Otherkin is. You know, people who believe their soul is really that of a lithe and nimble elf, a sleek, muscular and powerful dragon, a spritely and delicate little fairy, and it was just by some cruel cosmic accident they were born into their heavy, sweaty, stinky, pimple-covered greasy shell. Yeah. And where it may sound like classic escapism, the lengths these people go to to insist/defend/believe this are mindblowingly crazy frightening.

But if you think that is crazy, just wait ’til I actually get to my subject of this post: People who think their soul is that of, they are the cross-dimensional reincarnation of, they are linked spiritually to… an anime or video game or otherwise fictional character.

Meme’s The Word

Posted by MangaPunkSai on May 26, 2007

O RLY?My mom’s been using the internet more and more and like many of you out there I am concerned with parental safety on the internets. My mom’s in this grey, nebulous area where she’s not young enough to find *chan raids and sending disgusting pictures to your friends funny, but not old enough to know nothing about the internet beyond "the Google" and "it’s a series of tubes". I was already a tad worried when she started to become a YouTube addict, but her increasing activity on the intrawebs has made me realize just how far *chan memes have penetrated the internet as a whole.
