Bleach Sucks

Bleach AnimeOh here I go on another anime rant, I seem to be stuck in a vicious cycle. A while ago on deviantART someone was complaining about Adult Swim’s lineup, complained about Bleach, but then implied reruns of Cowboy Bebop would be worse. After calling the poster retarded I was quickly reminded of how much I hate the anime Bleach: the story of a boy who can see ghosts and gets the power to turn into an invisable samurai from an emo dead girl.

And before you ask: Yes I did actually watch it. I saw up to the story arc where the characters all ended up in the poorly named "Soul Society", at which point the show went from simply almost unbearable to completely unwatchable, despite numerous people telling me this is where the show is supposed to improve. Why was I watching it? Well it happened air on Adult Swim between Trinity Blood and Eureka 7, two anime I sorta wanted to watch (Eureka 7 wasn’t bad, but wasn’t that good either, and I missed the first few episodes so I still have no idea what the hell was going on in Trinity Blood) and I was too lazy to change the channel.

And no, I didn’t go into watching Bleach with any preconceived notions. I had heard of it, but I had no idea what it was about, so the show had only its own merits on which to impress me. And my first impression was: "Yeah, I liked this show the first time, when it was called Yu Yu Hakusho." Well okay, I’m exaggerating: I never liked Yu Yu Hakusho.

The first thing that struck me about Bleach was the character designs. They’re not very good and none of the characters appear to be drawn in the same style. The whole series reeks of a hack who just crammed together every popular genre, element and character type in an attempt to get a hit. Considering the guy who writes the Bleach manga had a previous manga that completely tanked, I suspect my speculation may be close to the truth.

Ichigo versus Kyo
Hey, Ichigo! Kyo Sohma called,
he wants his fucking hair dye back

At any rate, first there’s Ichigo, the hero, who looks and acts like an ugly knock-off of Kyo from Fruits Basket. Then there’s Rukia, the magical dead girl who lives in his closet, she looks like she belongs in Yugioh. Then there’s Chad, whose design I actually like, but when he’s put next to the other characters it looks like someone from Fist of the Northstar just walked into Naruto. Then there’s Fanservice McBouncey- I mean, D.D. Busty- No, no I mean, Oral-hime-*cough* Orihime. There we go. Quite possibly the most useless character in the show, but she gets to be a hero because the writer obviously dumped a handful of characters he still felt like drawing into the second story arc and forgot about all their friends and family and their previous Earthly lives.

Yeah that abrupt change in theme and location bothered me alot. Wouldn’t people worry these kids are missing? We never see their worried family or anything. Are they all dead? Did I fall asleep between those two parts? All I know is the writer (which I’m assuming the anime follows the manga) continues to write himself into corners by introducing way too many fucking characters. Okay, maybe you had some cool designs laying around, maybe you just don’t know any better way to keep a story going, but you don’t have to write in every goddamn person who pops into your head! Argh!

Bleach Anime
Tee hee! Like, I’m just here cause I’m a
young teenaged girl with big boobs!

I also greatly dislike the EVERY1 IZ SPESHUL aspect of the show, where all of Ichigo’s friends get powers… just because. Just because the manga artist only felt like drawing four of the characters from the first story arc and dumped them into the second story arc that might as well be a completely different goddamn story. Why not just start with that plot!? Or are you just making this shit up as you go along? Damn you Tite Kubo (which isn’t even your real name!)

Bleach Anime VGCats
lol VGCats

The show has no focus, it can’t decide on a genre (is it high school, magical girl, magical girlfriend, supernatural, samurai, fantasy, sci-fi, what the fuck is it!?) Not to mention the characters’ powers are as mismatched as their designs are from one another. Chad gets some… arm thing… that looks like it came right out of S-cry-Ed (which also sucks.) Oral-Princes-*brick’d* Orihime gets the power to summon fairy-like people who also all have very-different-from-each-other-designs and obviously exist just as an excuse to draw these overwrought characters. And nancy-boy… er.. what’s his name… Uryu, Uryu’s power looks like he stole the friggin’ bow of light thing from Slayers Try.

I honestly can’t understand why this show is so popular, then again I might have liked it myself when I was younger. And sure, maybe it’s one of those series that is just good brain candy, but please don’t try to tell me it’s much deeper than that.

Also, what the hell kind of title is "Bleach" anyway!?

I like Bleach…while I agree it’s not OMG TEH GREATEST ANIME EVARZZZ!1! and it’s absolutely NOT something that you would watch to make you think…I still like it. I don’t have your bitter, bitter view on life…yet >P Meh, Ichigo’s hair is orange because people like copying off each other.

Also, I disapprove of calling Orihime Oral-Princess (aw, it’s not her fault a pervy Japanese man draws her D: ), but I approve of calling Uryu ‘nancy boy.’ Heartily approve.

Bleach is popular because it’s really fun to watch. I happen to really like the show because the plot moves along quickly, the animation is very well done, and it has some humorous parts that make me laugh. But it’s definitely not deep, though-provoking stuff - just fun characters and quick-moving plots. Also, it’s one of the best new shows to make it to Adult Swim in a while. Eureka-7? Trinity Blood? S-cry-ed? Boring and uninspired. Formulaic or not, at least Bleach keeps me interested.

However, I am confused about the name, too. Is it because his hair is orange? I don’t get it.

None of them, not even Bleach, are as bad as Blood+

The thing about Bleach is that it’s not overly thought provoking until you try thinking about it, then you just get a headache. Tite is kinda known for his story arcs that I call the “let’s try this kind of crack” arcs.

I think probably the only thing I really like about the series (manga; I’ve never watched the anime and have stopped reading the manga because that has frankly gone to hell and Lucifer’s getting pissed and Azrael’s confused and a bit mad) is the swords, and that’s because I have a fascination with weaponry. And I kinda like the fairies, but it just seems so weird to have FAIRIES when just about everyone else has swords. Kubo Tite, I don’t want whatever crack you’re on.

I read an article on bleach in a mag and they said the name was”Bleach” because the hero’s hair is originally bleached…wich means he doesn’t have a natural hair colour….strange I know^^”" Yeah Orihime’s a big fanservice…if only her boops were well…not blocking her view from her feets^^”" But I really like Kon though…(even it’s a “wow-look-it’s-a-cute(sort of..)-mascot-for-the-show!” cliché)
But I don’t think Ichigo’s a copy, since the’re so many anime out there, it’s normal some characters are alike: Bleach’s a shonen (yeah, at least I’m sure of that) why the hell would it inspires itself from a shojo?? (even if the shojo in question is quite popular) I simply think orange is used to show he’s different. In fact, he’s not a oh-my-god-all-my-family-is-dead-and-I’m-so-sad character, and it’s a nice thing. (his family is quite wierd but it’s pretty fun) But you’re right, too many characters for my poor little head Y_Y (their names looks all the same…and I can’t take any name ending by maru anymore T_T)

I still like bleach,it’s pretty funny and we want to know what happenned to our 20 favorites characters, even if it take 180 stupid episodes…(I really hate when anime are so long…especially when we have only one episode a week and damn it, YTV (canadian) always seem to like the expression on my face when they start the show all over…”WTF?! Bleach is starting all over again??!!!*&?$#@#!!But the’re at least 130 episodes of that thing T_T” yup, try to see what it’s like.)

(pretty long comment…I had inspiration I guess^^”")

Yeah, I pretty much don’t like it for the same reasons. The only reason to watch it is because you don’t need to have been watching the whole series to know what’s going on…because nothing much is?

I kind of like bleach not that much though. It’s something you must watch while in an altered state of mind, caffeine, sugar, things like that, and then you must watch copious amounts.

Omg….Bleach…another failed anime [AS] airs.
Why can’t they just get rid of all the anime they show on there.
Sure I love Anime, but they show sucky anime.
What they should show is great anime like Hellsing or Nerima Daikon Brothers or PaniPoni Dash! or something that worth watching.
I have to admit I use to watch it but that was only and only because I liked the theme song and ending song when it first aired.
I really agree with ya Sai.
Bleach. friggen. sucks.

Not to sound like I’m defending the series, it’s only one of my favorite 100 (somewhere in the 30/40s) anime, but the part about “kids missing and their parents worrying”…the manga actually was written well enough to discuss this subject since only Ichigo needed to worry about it.

Ichigo simply used Kon to take over his body to make his family think he was still there. Uryu, Orihime and Chad were all alone in terms of family. Orihime only had her big brother, but he past away. Uryu had his grandfather until he was killed by Soul Reapers. Chad, well, it was never really explained. And as far as their friends were concerned, they pretty much only had one another.

Really, the manga was far better. “Zombie Powder”, ‘Tite Kubo’s’ first project, was more of a sleeper hit but bombed due to his horrid release schedule and some mental break down he supposedly had at the time.

Ah well, its just a mindless anime you watch for fun. Nothing more. There are far better things out there at the moment, but there are also far, far far worse things at the moment too.

Well considering that adult swim is basically the only source of
cable tv anime for us little aussies i think that bleach is pretty good..
Although i have already got 8 seasons of it on dvd i must say the fillers are
basically as long as the naruto ones. That really got on my nerves but i still
enjoy watching it. (sounds better in japanese personally).

Also i LOVE trinity blood, im not saying that everyone else has to like it
too but it would be nice if people considered others opinions. Just because
you personally dislike something that doesnt mean that every one has the same tastes.
And i again will not hate you for disagreeing with me its human nature after all..

So to tie it all off i do enjoy watching Bleach, Eureka 7 and Trinity blood but
i have seen better anime.

@Manga I think I might like Trinity Blood more if I could absorb/get into the plot. I’ve been contemplating if its worth buying on DVD or not one of these days. I enjoy the character designs, even if they are rather overwrought. I’m not usually into vampires and shit though.

I think the whole concept of souls turning into Hollows, the whole Soul Society thing, those damn Zanpakutos, and etc. are interesting. Sure, there are some “shinigami” manga/anime out there but I’ve never really encountered something like this. Of course, there’ll be a lot of characters as the story progresses. I personally like all of them (well…except for Uryuu. Never really liked characters with glasses and acts “cool”). And of course, there will be characters that’ll look like other characters from other anime because…well, guess what? There’s over a thousand of anime out there. I’m pretty sure some characters will look like said characters from said series. It’s just how it is. =P

Yes, you can tell I’m a BLEACH fan already. =P But like what others say in art or anything else, some people may like it and then some people may not like it. That’s just it. I do respect your opinion though. Just saying mine in return. :D

I agree. The sad thing about Bleach is that if it took itself more seriously and kept its premise tight and focused, it could be a much, much better anime. There are so many issues that could be addressed and explored with respect to Bleach’s Soul Society, the hollows, how death is viewed, etc. At the same time, so many things are glossed over (why model it after edo Japan? Do people from other countries and cultures end up in Soul Society, or do only Japanese people go to heaven? What about the more famous people that have died? It would be pretty bad-ass to see a Shinigami Abraham Lincoln..). It really is like a bunch of shit just slapped together…

I like Bleach a lot, but it’s gotten worse since the Arrancar arc started (I skipped the filler, so I can’t speak for that). The recent episodes are so boring! I loved the Soul Society arc- it was just pure crack and insanity. I agree that Bleach isn’t the most original series out there, but it’s a lot of stupid fun. And Orihime become more interesting later in the series. She’s the only reason I still watch it. I can relate to her a lot- she has low self-esteem, but she’s not emo about it, and tries to feel better. I really like that about her. But she was kinda boring earlier on. It’s not until later is Soul Society arc that I liked her. Now she’s my favorite female character.

Oh, and I watched the first episode of Trinity Blood and couldn’t understand what was going on. And not in that mysteries-for-later-episodes or this-is-pure-crack way, but that I didn’t know things that would’ve made that episode make sense. And the main character was a bad Vash knockoff.
